With so many diets, wellness trends, and healing modalities available today, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Every week seems to bring a new approach to weight loss, healthy eating, mental health, or managing life transitions. While much of the information can be helpful, the sheer volume of advice can leave us feeling confused, discouraged, and stuck.

Ironically, the path to better health is often much simpler than we think.

Years ago, I met a woman who shared an interesting observation about her weight-loss journey. She told me that in the past, she had lost weight almost effortlessly. It wasn’t something she obsessed over or spent hours researching. Yet in the present, she was finding it increasingly difficult to keep her weight down, and the struggle was beginning to make her miserable.

As we talked, we began comparing the two periods of her life.

  • What was different?
  • Had her metabolism changed dramatically?
  • Was she following a different diet?
  • Had she discovered some secret formula years ago that she had forgotten?

Surprisingly, the answer was much simpler.

The biggest difference was that she wasn’t overthinking everything.

Back then, she took evening walks with her spouse. She ate reasonably healthy meals and paid attention to portion sizes. She spent time with friends, stayed socially connected, and enjoyed her life.

Health was simply part of her routine rather than the centre of her attention.

Most importantly, she wasn’t constantly analyzing, tracking, measuring, and worrying about every decision she made.

Her challenge in the present wasn’t necessarily a lack of knowledge. In fact, she knew more about nutrition and health than ever before. The challenge was that she had become trapped in a cycle of overthinking.

I could relate.

After COVID and a particularly stressful period in my own life, I found myself carrying extra weight that I wanted to lose. Like many people, I initially looked for answers in plans, programs, and strategies. But what ultimately helped me was returning to the basics.

Instead of obsessing over every calorie or weighing myself constantly, I focused on a few simple habits:

  • Paying attention to what I was eating through mindful eating.
  • Making wiser food choices and choosing more whole, nourishing foods.
  • Being aware of portion sizes without becoming restrictive.
  • Staying active in ways I enjoyed.
  • Focusing on living my life rather than constantly keeping score.

Something unexpected happened. The less I obsessed over the outcome, the easier the process became. Without the stress, pressure, and constant self-monitoring, healthy habits began to feel natural again, and the weight came off.

This doesn’t mean that goals, education, or accountability are unimportant. They certainly have their place. However, there is also value in stepping back and asking whether we have made health more complicated than it needs to be.

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is trust the basics:

  • Eat mindfully
  • Move regularly
  • Connect with people we care about
  • And allow ourselves to enjoy life.

When we stop fighting ourselves and start focusing on simple, sustainable habits, we may discover that health feels less like a battle—and more like a natural by-product of living well.

Enjoy your life!
